spring bank holiday

Invitation to a Moto Guzzi meeting, in Northern Ireland

Ulster Rally

Spring Bank Holiday 2009

Some people may make a longer holiday of it. The North West 200 road race is on Saturday 16th, the weekend before. There is a week of festivities from Saturday 9th May.

Accommodation The accommodation base will be at Portaferry, at the mouth of Strangford Lough. This is a superb location and it is within easy traveling distance of the Larne and Belfast ferries.

Barholm self catering accommodation, see here:

The main  riding locations will be:

  • North East Coast The North Antrim Coast road including Torr Head

  • South EastCoast 'St Patrick's Country': around Strangford Lough and down to Newcastle / Mourne mountains area – you could call it the south coast road.

For those with extra time for their own riding, the Fermanagh Lakes in the west would be a fabulous trip, as would County Donegal, the most northerly part of Ulster and Ireland – which is actually in the South of Ireland! Another good area, not very far from our location, is
  • Mid Ulster and the Sperrin mountains.

In recent years, there has been a Moto Guzzi V.11 UK meet,
organised through the V.11 LeMans board.
There were also a few Erin Rallys (particularly 2005 & 2006) organised through MGCGB down south in Inchigeelagh, Co Cork

The annual V.11 meeting is always a welcome opportunity for a face to face and bike to bike get-together. Happily, some of the V.11 members are coming to Northern Ireland in 2009. I've decided to use the 'Ulster' name for this event, mainly because of historical motorcycling resonance with such as –
  • the Motorcycle Union of Ireland with its Ulster Centre      The MCUI has the distinction of being the oldest national governing body of motor cycle sport in the world. The Motorcycle Union of Ireland (MCUI) was formed on 7th March 1902 and pre-dates both the Auto Cycle Union - the British mainland governing body, founded in 1903 - and the world governing body, the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme – International Motorcycling Federation, which was founded in 1904)
  • the Ulster Grand Prix     'the world's fastest road race'
  • and even the Rudge Ulster    "nice bike!"
